Naturally, the year can be divided in various ways, as mentioned above: by solar phenomena, the agricultural year, the seasons, lunations, and into fixed months and days. The later runestocks, fashioned out of a four-sided, square cross-section stick, aptly divide the year into four. But this division is not usually by season or month, but by the four solar quarters. Taking the equinoxes as the baseline of equal day and night length, the winter half of the year is the period when the days are shorter than the nights. On the contrary, its complementary opposite, or daemonium, the summer half, is the period when days are longer than nights. Midway between the equinoxes are the winter solstice, the shortest day (and the longest night) and the summer solstice, the longest day (with the shortest night). They form the intermediate markers on the runestocks. The first side of the runestock begins at the commencement of the growing light, the first quarter of the year from the midwinter solstice to the spring equinox. The second side of the almanac is the period of lengthening days after the equinox, culminating in the longest day. These first two sides comprise the lengthening-day pair, symmetrical around the equinox point. The third side is the period of declining day-length from the summer solstice to the autumnal equinox; and the fourth marks the dwindling day-length when nights are longer than days, as far as winter solstice. Like the first two sides of the stave, these two are symmetrical around the equinox-point. The relationship between increasing day-length and decreasing night, and vice-versa, is expressed in the Ing rune, where the crossing-points mark the equinoxes and the wide points the solstices.
